gelli plate: monochromatic prints with magazines

another workshop in bad aibling (taught by angela) showed us the technique how to get monochromatic Transfers from Magazine pages via the gelli plate.
unfortunately lazy Johanna had not done her homework and was not prepared to bring matching Magazines... you best take the ones with a Little glossy shine as in Fashion magazines (actually i don´t buy this kind, so i will have to look for substitutes)
anyway, i tried it with Pictures i got from others and was totally fascinated with this technique.

you Need water-soluble linocut paints. one Color per print (plus a Little bit of black)
if it works, it Looks absolutely gorgeous. but be Patient, a lot of Trial is needed and errors will occur. sometimes you have dark spots on it and don´t know why. or other Trouble.
but i will definitely give it a try again when i have time to gather template pages. i know it will be hard, as i´m not very Patient, but maybe practice will help.

on my last sample you see on top the papers i used (i washed away the Color afterwards, so you see the originals) and below the prints i made with them. lots of stripes in the Wigwams... well... 

and now the technique in short:
- look for an appropriate magazine page (or part of it): best are text in black/white, pictures with white space around them, pictures with contrast including white... experiment and you will find what is practical
-  brayer your gelli plate with a thin coat of water-soluble linocut paint (take one color plus a hint of black linocut paint); practice is everything here. keep the color thin, brayer until you a have a kind of "smacking" - then stop or the paint will "withdraw" to the brayer and leave the gelli plate; then you have to make a new start...
- lay your magazine page (face down) onto the g.p. ~ brayer or spread it down with the hand
- pull away the magazine; you can already see a shine of the print that you will get in the next step:
- lay a piece of white cardstock onto the g.p. ~ again brayer it down or spread it with the hand
- pull it off and your print is ready...
tipp: this technique also works with white lino-paint (in this case you don´t add black paint) brayered onto the g.p, taking a normal black-on-white text page from the magazine and printed onto black cardstock. thus you get white letters on black. looks very good!!

  1. Das ist natürlich wieder eine Technik für mich! Muss ich unbedingt probieren, obwohl ich mich frage, warum die Texte nicht spiegelverkehrt erscheinen...!
    Da habe ich bestimmt etwas nicht richtig verstanden.
    So tolle Sachen macht ihr bei euren Treffen, das ist ja zum neidisch werden!

  2. I've never heard of water soluble linocut paints. I will do an internet search to see if I can tell what it is and if I have something similar in my stash. Thanks for the tutorial, because I really need to learn to like my gelli.

  3. What an interesting technique! I love the effect. I wonder if linocut paint is the same as speedball printing ink?

    my brand name is schmincke, but that might be popular only here.
    for testing i would suggest to buy only few and small tubes: blue (if they have: Cyan), maybe red and green. AND - important: black.
