i have my reasons why i´m NOT at facebook or twitter. and if you pin my work on pinterest, please make sure to link it back to me by taking the button on my side: that will bring you to my board with all my art-links. thanks for respecting that.

i consider my blog to be my "artistic diary" - so i can recap what i made and which influences i got (exhibitions etc).

currently i try to publish frequently once in a week (mondays/tuesdays mostly)

frauenchiemsee

letzten freitag war es an der zeit,
noch ein Geburtstagsgeschenk einzulösen:
ein ausflug an den chiemsee
last friday was the day to redeem this gift certificate,
a trip to the chiemsee

ideal sunny weather... and the car ride to prien took about 1 ¾ hours

my wish was to visit the Island Frauenchiemsee
(i know the other Island, herrenchiemsee, from my Student times, and was not eager to go to the Palace again;))

Fahrzeit ca ½ stunde
it took about half an hour to get to the fraueninsel

the Island is quite small
(air photo from the Internet),
but idyllic and quiet (no cars)

Das Kloster Frauenwörth prägt den Charakter von Frauenchiemsee...
the characteristic building is the abbey

but first we went around to discover the rest of the Island:

there are many private small jetties for the boats of the fishers

fishing is a great subject here, also in craftwork,
and of Course we also ate fish (with a cool pils)

the idyllic seating places like this one of course are private

kurioses altes boot...
a funny old boat...

there are about 50 houses on the Island (300 inhabitants)
very neat, and of course a bit set back, because the People who live there also Need some privacy.
along the east shore of the Island there are craft and art Shops, ceramics, jewelry etc -
but they don´t like to take photos

after another break (coffee & cake) we came back to the abbey.
the free-Standing bell Tower is a Landmark of the Chiemgau.

the church reminds of blessed irmengard, the first abbess here known by Name. she was the great-granddaughter of Charlemagne (died 866 at the Age of 33).

behind the altar the chapel of irmengard with relics of her and many ex voto signs for help she had provided.

at the entry to the church there is a small graveyard,
which reminded me of the one i wrote about last week...
wrought iron crosses seem to be typical for the region...

das enzianmotiv natürlich kennzeichnend für das voralpenland
the motif of the gentian characteristic for the alpine upland

sonnen...
suns...

below the rays captured by the spiderwebs...

die äskulapschlange an einem arztgrab...
the snake of Asklepios at a grave of a medical doctor

and finally a bit of late afternoon atmosphere at the lake

back in prien we had some dinner, sitting directly at the shore.
it was a perfect day and the best presents just are the ones where you can have time together.

  1. I so agree with you about the best presents Johanna. What a charming island! Thank you for sharing it as it's probably not a place I will ever see in person.
And thanks so much for the recipe to rid of fruit flies-I tried it and it worked!!
    Happy T day!

  3. What a thoughtful birthday gift from someone who must know you well. The setting of the Bavarian island of Frauenchiemsee is beautiful and I can see why you were so impressed with it.

I can't begin to imagine the beauty of this place, but your photos, which I enlarged, were stunning and gave me a feel for the place. I have one of those umbrellas to sit under, but I sure don't have the same view as that private home had.

LOVED the graveyard photos. Stunning and beautiful, and so very different than those found here in the states. Our history only goes back about 300 years, so there is truly no comparison.

The bell tower is lovely, but the interior of the church is simply stunning. All that gold, gilt, and statues felt almost like a different place than the rather austere exterior of the abbey.

I enjoyed the various fish from the island. They were clever, too. Of course, I'm sure the best fish was your meal, as well as your Pils.

Thanks for taking us to Frauenchiemsee, showing the island, the shops, and sharing your meal and Pils with us for T this Tuesday.

  15. Oh that was a fun trip (for us too) and what a great Birthday present, not something to keep but something to experience. I liked the sun sculpture and the one after it, and the church looks quite exotic.
I followed Elizabeth's tip and enlarged the photographs which made the trip even more interesting. The overhead shot of the small island was fascinating.

  17. What a beautiful place to choose! I can see why of course - it does look very peaceful! Best of all was the visit to the graveyard! I think I may have mentioned my fascination with the beautiful graveyards there on the continent! Happy T day, Chrisx

    Julia
